Overview: International Peace & Conflict Resolution Skills Institute Program provides an opportunity for participants to acquire skills in conflict resolution and other related topics, which can be utilized in both professional and personal lives. The institute's intensive training courses combine skills to work with conflicts that have international, community and public policy dimensions.
Objectives:
- To introduce students to cutting edge practical skills outside of SIS.
- To connect students with practitioners as a way of promoting networking between students who are looking to expand their contacts, and practitioners who may be in a position to hire interns or employees.
- To provide students with a hands-on, interactive experience. Despite the interactive nature of the IPCR program, the skills institute program is designed specifically to explore further the practical applications that complement theory taught in our program.
Hours: 4:00pm to 9:00pm on Friday and 9:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday
Credits: Each institute is worth one credit hour of graduate level work. (Course Number: SIS-639)
Eligible Students: All AU and consortium university graduate students and SIS Joint MA/JD students are eligible. Undergraduates and non-degree students admitted by permission of IPCR and the instructor.
Instructors: The instructors are practitioners with either a PhD or several years of field experience. Most instructors have teaching experience, but the primary focus is on practice. In the past, a policy that AU full-time faculty shall not teach these courses due to the overload of teaching responsibilities that this would cause (as determined by SIS Administration) has been implemented. However, in some cases, there have been exceptions, based on demands of topical expertise and unexpected circumstances. AU Faculty members are invited to submit proposals as well.
Registration: Students register as they would for regular courses. Students may register up to the date the institute begins, but since space is limited to twenty per course, early registration is strongly recommended. Students are registered on a first-come, first-served basis. Students may drop an institute with a 100% refund provided that the add-drop forms are filled out and signed no later than the day prior to the beginning of the institute. Students may register at: http://american.edu/registrar
